Ahmedabad Road Accident: Car Drags Activa for 1 Km, Driver Held

Ahmedabad road accident scene involving a car and scooter near a city traffic signal

A 29-year-old car driver was arrested after allegedly hitting a scooter rider at a signal on Ahmedabad’s Drive-In Road and dragging the Activa for about one kilometre while attempting to flee, according to a report by Divya Bhaskar. The incident took place on the night of October 15 near the Himalaya Mall intersection, and the driver was later intercepted by local people near Vastrapur Lake.

The scooter rider, identified as 21-year-old Nakshatra Rahul Chauhan, was waiting at the traffic signal when a Vadodara-registered Innova car allegedly approached at high speed and hit his Activa. Chauhan, who lives in the Vasna area and works as a salesman at a stall near Palladium Mall, fell on the road and suffered minor injuries, the report said.

The impact left the Activa stuck beneath the front of the car. Instead of stopping, the driver allegedly continued towards the Vastrapur area, with the scooter being dragged along the road. Sparks were seen coming from the Activa as it scraped against the surface, startling people waiting at the signal and other motorists in the area.

According to the report, the car travelled from the Sanjeevani Hospital area towards the NFD Circle after taking a U-turn near the hospital. It passed through the Doordarshan Four Roads area while the scooter remained trapped underneath. The Activa eventually came loose when the car crossed a speed breaker near a road cut.

Local residents and other motorists followed the vehicle. When the driver reached the area near Vastrapur Lake, they surrounded him and handed him over to the police. The driver was identified as Pankajkumar Nanjibhai Nanoma, a resident of Rajasthan. The report said he was found to be under the influence of alcohol after being stopped.

The A Division Traffic Police registered a case against Nanoma and arrested him in connection with the incident. Police have begun further investigation into the collision, the alleged attempt to flee, the condition of the driver and the circumstances surrounding the road accident. The case also places attention on the risks faced by two-wheeler users waiting at signalised junctions, particularly on busy urban corridors where speeding vehicles and delayed intervention can quickly turn a collision into a larger public-safety incident.
