Khed police have registered a case after the sarpanch of Jaidwadi village in Pune district alleged that AI-generated videos targeting her and her family were circulated on social media, followed by a demand for ₹10 lakh and threats to kill her husband.
The complaint was filed by Sheetal Vikas Zaid, the sarpanch of Jaidwadi gram panchayat, against Anandraje Indumati Patil, a resident of Pargaon in Ambegaon taluka. Police registered the case on Thursday, October 15, according to Khed police inspector Subhash Chavan.
According to the complaint, Patil allegedly created and circulated false videos using artificial intelligence against the sarpanch from June 18 onwards. The videos were reportedly shared in village groups and sent to her husband, Vikas Zaid, who runs a hotel business. The complaint also alleges that the social media posts created obstacles to government work linked to village development.
The family initially ignored the posts, the complaint states. The alleged extortion demand was made in a voice message sent to Vikas Zaid’s mobile phone at about 5.57 am on October 5. The complainant has alleged that the message demanded ₹10 lakh in exchange for deleting the circulated posts and threatened that further posts would be released if the money was not paid.
The complaint further alleges that another voice message was sent at about 10.54 pm on October 13. In that message, Patil allegedly threatened to kill Vikas Zaid and claimed to possess a weapon. The sarpanch has also alleged that defamatory videos continued to be circulated on social media.
The case places a village-level governance dispute alongside the growing misuse of digital tools to create and distribute manipulated content. In this instance, the alleged circulation of the videos was not limited to a private exchange: the complaint says they were shared in village groups and affected the family of an elected local representative. The reported threats also involved a demand linked directly to removing the posts.
The police case is based on the allegations submitted by the sarpanch. The available report does not state whether Patil has been arrested, whether the alleged videos have been taken down, or which specific legal provisions have been invoked. It also does not provide an independent technical assessment establishing that the videos were generated or altered using artificial intelligence.
Khed police have confirmed the registration of the offence through Inspector Subhash Chavan. Further action, including examination of the voice messages, tracing the circulation of the videos and determining the authenticity and origin of the digital material, will be part of the police investigation.
