Hyderabad Voter Enrollment Crosses 4.13 Lakh Applications

Hyderabad voter enrollment applications being processed during the electoral roll revision

Hyderabad has recorded 4,13,146 applications for inclusion in Telangana’s electoral rolls this year, the highest among districts in the state, as the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) generates a large volume of requests from first-time voters, young electors and residents whose names were excluded from the rolls.

According to information shared by the office of the Telangana Chief Electoral Officer, 2,04,346 of the applications submitted in Hyderabad have been approved, while 73,868 have been rejected and 1,34,932 remain pending clearance. Applicants used Form-6, the application form for inclusion of a name in the electoral roll.

The figures cover applications received during the current enrollment exercise. They show that nearly one-third of Hyderabad’s applications remain pending, while the number of approved applications is lower than the number still awaiting a decision. An official from the Telangana CEO’s office said applications are rejected when the submitted documents are not proper.

Before the SIR exercise began, Hyderabad received 2,15,462 applications for voter identity cards. Of these, 1,44,874 applicants were issued Elector Photo Identity Cards, or EPICs. A further 64,029 applications were rejected and 6,559 were pending at various stages, according to the information shared by the Chief Electoral Officer’s office.

During the ongoing SIR exercise alone, the Election Commission of India received 1,97,684 applications in Hyderabad. So far, 59,472 of these have been accepted, 9,839 rejected and 1,28,373 kept pending for a decision. The SIR-related figures therefore account for a substantial share of the district’s total applications reported this year.

Hyderabad’s enrollment numbers were higher than those recorded in the neighbouring districts of Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri. Rangareddy received 1,58,831 applications, of which 64,434 have been approved, while Medchal-Malkajgiri received 1,14,647 applications and approved 35,029.

Across Telangana, 10,22,757 applications were filed this year. The Election Commission has approved 4,28,965 applications, rejected 2,12,931 and kept 3,80,861 pending. The state-level figures indicate that a significant share of applications has not yet reached a final decision.

The enrollment exercise has also included overseas Indians seeking inclusion in Telangana’s electoral rolls. A total of 8,100 Form-6A applications were submitted by overseas Indians. Of these, 1,059 were approved, 1,307 rejected and 5,734 remained pending.

The pending applications place document scrutiny and clearance at the centre of the exercise, particularly in Hyderabad, where the volume of submissions is the highest in the state. The Telangana CEO’s office has indicated that decisions depend on whether applicants provide proper documentation. Further approvals, rejections and clearances will determine how many of the applications translate into additions to the electoral rolls.
