Kunal Icon Road Water Pipeline Cost Rises by ₹1.47 Crore

Kunal Icon Road water pipeline works planned alongside a developing road in Pimple Saudagar

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has proposed an additional ₹1.47 crore for water pipeline works on Kunal Icon Road in Pimple Saudagar, taking the project’s revised estimate to nearly ₹39.68 crore before GST and price escalation.

The proposal has been placed before the PCMC General Body for approval. The project covers the 1,780-metre road between Shivar Chowk and Govind Garden Chowk in Ward 28 and includes civil works, water supply, drainage and electrical infrastructure.

The additional allocation will raise the cost of the water supply component to ₹3.47 crore. PCMC has cited new pipeline works and the relocation of an existing pipeline as the reasons for the increase. The proposed additional expenditure is ₹1,47,40,151, while the revised water supply component is estimated at ₹3,47,42,421, excluding the applicable 18% Goods and Services Tax and price escalation.

The road project received administrative approval of ₹55 crore for BRTS-related works under PCMC’s D Ward Office through Administrator Resolution No. 388 dated July 25, 2023. The revised estimate for the entire project now stands at ₹39,68,17,810, excluding GST and price escalation.

Under the original road plan, a 300-millimetre-diameter ductile iron water pipeline was to be laid alongside the 18-metre-wide section of Kunal Icon Road. The road development includes a 1,480-metre stretch with a width of 18 metres and another 300-metre stretch with a width of 12 metres.

PCMC’s proposal links the revised pipeline plan to the growth of housing societies, educational institutions, commercial complexes and sports facilities in the area. It states that anticipated growth in water demand has led to changes in the proposed network.

DRA Consultants, appointed to restructure the civic body’s water supply network, have recommended laying 450-millimetre and 600-millimetre ductile iron pipelines on both sides of the road, in addition to the existing 300-millimetre pipelines in the area. The expanded works are intended to be completed before the road is concreted.

The proposal says completing the pipeline works before concreting would help avoid excavation of the newly developed road at a later stage. The General Body will now consider whether to approve the revised estimate and the additional allocation for the water supply works.
