Erode Rainfall Floods Key Roads as 156 mm Hits City

Erode rainfall leaves water stagnated on a city road near commercial areas

Erode recorded 156 mm of rainfall during an intense spell that lasted from 7 pm to midnight, leaving water stagnated across key roads and public areas and disrupting vehicular and pedestrian movement, officials said.

The heavy rain affected Meenakshi Sundaranar Road, the Old Municipal Corporation market area, the Central bus stand and Erode Fort areas. Stormwater also entered shops in low-lying parts of the city, according to the report carried by PTI.

Officials said the city recorded 156 mm of rainfall within five hours. The report also described the figure as the rainfall recorded in Erode over 24 hours, with the heaviest spell occurring between 7 pm and midnight. Residents said the district had not experienced rainfall of this intensity for a long time.

The disruption was concentrated in areas that combine high pedestrian activity, commercial operations and important transport functions. Water stagnation around the Central bus stand affected movement in one of the city’s key public-transport locations, while flooding near the market area affected shops and access to commercial premises.

Rainwater accumulation on Meenakshi Sundaranar Road and in the Erode Fort area also affected traffic and pedestrian movement. The reported entry of stormwater into shops in low-lying locations highlights how intense rainfall can quickly disrupt ground-level activity even when the episode is limited to a few hours.

Rainfall was recorded across several other parts of Erode district, although totals varied significantly. Modakurichi received 94 mm, followed by Bhavani at 72 mm and Gunderipallam at 57 mm. The Bhavanisagar dam site recorded 56.2 mm, while Chennimalai received 52 mm and Perundurai 51 mm.

Kodumudi recorded 33.4 mm, Nambiyur 24 mm, Kavindapadi 21.6 mm and Ammapettai 21.2 mm. Varattupallam received 20.6 mm, Gobichettipalayam 19.2 mm, Elandaikuttaimedu 15.6 mm, Thalavadi 15.2 mm and Sathyamangalam 9 mm.

The incident has placed the functioning of the city’s stormwater drainage and water-removal arrangements under immediate pressure, particularly in low-lying commercial areas and around transport facilities. The supplied report did not provide details of any municipal clearance operation, traffic diversion, property damage assessment or further rainfall forecast. Authorities’ next response and the restoration of movement in the affected locations remain the key developments to monitor.
