Gangasagar Water Spout Triggers Coastal Safety Alert

Gangasagar water spout rising from the sea near a crowded bathing ghat

A powerful water spout appeared in the sea near Gangasagar’s second bathing ghat, close to the Kapil Muni Ashram, on Thursday morning, alarming pilgrims, tourists and local residents and prompting authorities to advise people to keep away from the shoreline.

The water spout reportedly remained visible for around four to five minutes. People gathered near the coast saw seawater rising into the air, creating panic in an area that attracts large numbers of pilgrims and visitors.

The incident was reported from Gangasagar in South 24 Parganas. According to Sanmarg, the phenomenon occurred in the sea near the second bathing ghat located close to the Kapil Muni Ashram. The report described it as a powerful natural event but did not provide further details on its cause or intensity.

The local administration advised people to maintain a safe distance from the beach in view of the incident. Police also increased surveillance in areas adjoining the shoreline to monitor conditions and prevent visitors from moving too close to the water.

Gangasagar is a significant pilgrimage and tourism destination, making crowd and shoreline management an important part of local administration, particularly when unusual coastal conditions are observed. The immediate response focused on separating visitors from the water and maintaining watch along the coast.

No injuries, damage to buildings or disruption to local services were reported in the supplied account. The administration’s safety advisory and the increased police monitoring remained in place after the water spout subsided.
