Pune Hospital Medicine Storage Exposes Dangerous Civic Health Gap

Pune hospital medicine storage area at a municipal dispensary in Shivajinagar

Medicine storage at Pune Municipal Corporation’s Amrale dispensary in Shivajinagar has come under scrutiny after Mayor Manjusha Nagpure found medicines meant for patients kept in an untidy tin shed during a surprise inspection on Thursday, October 15. She directed the civic administration to investigate the lapse, fix responsibility and shift the stock immediately to a safe location.

According to a report by Lokmat – Pune, Nagpure visited the dispensary in the morning without prior notice and reviewed its day-to-day medical work, facilities available to patients, cleanliness and medicine inventory. During the inspection, medicines received for patient treatment were found stored in a tin-roofed room instead of a secure area with suitable temperature conditions.

The report said the conditions inside the shed, including the possibility of excessive heat, could put the quality of the medicines at risk. It did not identify the medicines involved, provide details of their quantities or state whether any patient had received medicine affected by the storage conditions.

Nagpure expressed strong displeasure at the arrangement and reprimanded the health officials present, the report said. She warned that such negligence would not be tolerated in civic dispensaries serving ordinary residents. The mayor also instructed the administration to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and determine which officials or operational failures were responsible.

The episode highlights the operational chain behind medicine availability in municipal healthcare facilities. Procuring medicines is only one part of the system; stock must also be received, recorded, stored and issued under conditions that protect its quality. When supplies are kept in an unsuitable space, the issue extends beyond housekeeping and raises questions about inventory control, facility planning and supervisory checks.

The Amrale dispensary serves residents in Shivajinagar through Pune’s municipal healthcare network. The report did not provide details of the dispensary’s storage capacity, the duration for which the medicines had been kept in the tin room or whether a formal stock audit had been conducted before the mayor’s visit.

Nagpure directed officials to move the entire medicine stock from the tin room to a safe and appropriate location without delay. She also ordered that the dispensary’s arrangements be brought back into order and that an inquiry report be submitted so that administrative action could be taken against those found responsible.

The next official step is the inquiry ordered by the mayor and the immediate relocation of the medicines. The report did not specify a deadline for the inquiry report or identify the officials who will conduct it.
