Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) will assess government buildings and premises whose holding tax has not yet been determined, measure the properties and issue tax notices as it seeks to expand municipal revenue during the current financial year.
Municipal commissioner Sushant Gaurav directed civic officials to identify such properties, generate tax demands and serve notices to the concerned government establishments during a revenue review meeting on Thursday, according to the RMC.
The civic body has collected approximately Rs 62 crore in taxes so far in the current financial year. Its revenue sources include holding tax on residential and commercial properties, water user charges, solid waste user charges, municipal trade licence fees and other fees for civic services.
The assessment of government properties is intended to address premises where holding tax has not yet been determined. Officials have been asked to measure the properties before calculating the applicable demand and issuing notices. The RMC did not specify the number of government buildings covered by the exercise or the additional revenue expected from the assessments.
The corporation also directed officials to identify major defaulters and recover pending property tax and water user charges. Hotels, banquet halls and other commercial establishments will be pursued for unpaid solid waste user charges. The civic body said action would be taken against establishments that fail to pay as prescribed.
To make property tax payments easier, RMC officials have been instructed to organise collection camps through zonal offices three days a week. The camps will be held at selected locations, with residents informed in advance so they can make payments without having to visit the corporation’s main offices.
The civic body has also renewed its push for online payment of property tax and other municipal charges. Residents can use the RMC website, www.ranchimunicipal.com, or the corporation’s WhatsApp chatbot at 8986627070 to check outstanding dues and make payments.
RMC introduced the WhatsApp payment facility in May 2025. The service allows residents to access their dues and pay municipal charges digitally. The latest revenue review placed online payments alongside field-level collection camps and action against defaulters as part of the corporation’s current collection strategy.
The revenue review covered holding tax, water user charges and solid waste user charges. The corporation’s directions will now require zonal officials to conduct property assessments, organise payment camps, pursue outstanding dues and inform residents about the available digital payment channels.
