A Seraikela road accident killed a 16-year-old Class X student after a truck struck his scooter on the Seraikela-Rajnagar bypass in Jharkhand’s Seraikela-Kharsawan district on Thursday, police said. The student, identified as Sagar Hembram, was travelling to a Dandiya programme organised by his school when the crash occurred.
Hembram, a resident of Hadisai village and a student of St Francis De Sales School in Seraikela, was near a petrol pump when the truck rammed into his scooter, according to police. The collision occurred as the truck was turning towards Rajanagar.
Seraikela police station officer-in-charge Vinay Kumar said Hembram came under the rear wheels of the truck. The officer said the student’s body was sent to Seraikela sadar hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The truck was seized after the crash, while police were searching for the driver. The police statement did not provide details about the driver’s identity or specify whether an arrest had been made by the time of the report.
The crash also disrupted movement on the bypass. Traffic came to a standstill following the accident, resulting in a long traffic jam on the route. The incident occurred while the student was travelling to a school-organised Dandiya programme held as part of Navratri celebrations.
The fatality places attention on the safety conditions around a bypass used by mixed traffic, including heavy vehicles and two-wheelers. The available police account identifies the truck’s turning movement and the collision near a petrol pump, but does not provide further details about road design, traffic controls, visibility, speed restrictions or whether any other vehicle was involved.
Police proceedings were continuing after the truck was seized. The next formal steps include the post-mortem examination and efforts to trace and arrest the driver, according to the Seraikela police station officer-in-charge.
