West Bengal has opened a 24-hour central control room at Nabanna and similar facilities in every district to monitor emergencies during the Durga Puja–Chhath festive period, with residents able to report incidents through two helplines.
The central facility will operate under the supervision of the state disaster management department from Panchami on Thursday until November 16, the day after Chhath Puja. Senior officials and other personnel will staff the control room round the clock, according to a report by Times of India – Kolkata.
Residents can contact the Nabanna control room on 22143526 or 1070 to report an emergency or natural disaster. The state government has also established 24-hour control rooms in all districts to support local response and coordination.
The arrangement is intended to provide continuous surveillance during a period when large public gatherings, travel, temporary installations and community celebrations can increase the need for quick coordination between departments. The control rooms will monitor situations across the state and facilitate responses to emergencies, including natural disasters.
The district-level facilities are expected to act as the first coordination points for incidents within their respective jurisdictions, while the central control room at Nabanna will provide state-level oversight. The setup places the disaster management department at the centre of communication between officials and agencies during the extended festive period.
The state has not disclosed in the supplied report the number of personnel assigned to each district control room, the departments linked to the facilities or the response-time targets for emergency calls.
