Pune power cuts lasting up to 14 hours have disrupted households, businesses, students, hospitals, farms and essential services in Bhosari, Dehu, Yelwadi and surrounding areas, prompting a local action committee to warn of a road blockade on Friday if supply is not restored.
Residents have demanded immediate intervention from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL), citing repeated outages, power fluctuations, low voltage and delays in restoring supply. In Bhosari, residents said interruptions have continued even as temperatures remain high in October, leaving households without fans for several hours and making cooking, cooling drinking water and resting after work difficult.
Residents also raised concerns about the impact on women observing fasts during Navratri. They said prolonged outages were affecting routine household activities and increasing discomfort during the heat. Repeated complaints have not, according to residents, resulted in a reliable supply or a clear explanation of the cause of the interruptions.
The situation has reportedly been more severe in parts of Dehu, Yelwadi and neighbouring villages, where outages have lasted between eight and 10 hours and, in some locations, extended to 14 consecutive hours. Nitin Gade of the Talegaon-Chakan Highway Action Committee said in a representation to MSEDCL officials that the disruptions were affecting students, farmers, hospitals, medical stores, businesses, senior citizens and homemakers.
The committee said frequent fluctuations and low voltage had compounded the problem. Power interruptions have also stopped agricultural water pumps from operating, affecting farming activity in the villages. Residents have urged MSEDCL to investigate the recurring failures and undertake urgent technical measures to stabilise the distribution network.
A key demand is that the electricity distribution company publish a fixed schedule for planned maintenance and provide advance notice to residents. The committee objected to power cuts occurring between 10am and 5.30pm without adequate information, saying residents need clarity on whether interruptions are planned maintenance or the result of faults requiring emergency restoration.
The committee has warned that it will stage a road blockade on Friday if electricity supply in Dehu, Yelwadi and the surrounding villages does not return to normal. Copies of its representation have been sent to the chief minister, deputy chief minister, local MLA, revenue officials and the police. MSEDCL’s response and any restoration schedule were not included in the report.
