Bengaluru Rains: IMD Forecasts Heavy Showers for Three Days

Bengaluru rains causing waterlogging and traffic disruption on an urban road

Bengaluru is expected to receive rain for the next six days, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting heavy showers in parts of the city and surrounding areas from October 17 to 19. The forecast comes after rain on Thursday disrupted traffic and left roads waterlogged in several locations, including parts of the Bengaluru–Hosur route.

Rain accompanied by strong winds was reported in Rajajinagar, Indiranagar, Basaveshwaranagar, Vijayanagar, Marathahalli and Yelahanka, among other areas. The showers began in several parts of the city around 4pm after a cloudy morning and increasing wind speeds. Rain continued in some locations during the evening, affecting people travelling home after work.

According to the IMD forecast cited by Prajavani, Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural districts are likely to receive rain over the next six days. Moderate rain is expected on October 16, while some areas may receive heavy rain on October 17, 18 and 19. Moderate showers are possible again on October 20 and 21.

For the next 24 hours, the city is expected to remain generally cloudy, with moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds of 30–40 kmph. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 31 degrees Celsius and 21 degrees Celsius respectively.

The IMD has forecast generally cloudy conditions over the following 48 hours as well. Rain could range from heavy to moderate, with thunderstorms and winds reaching 30–40 kmph. Temperatures during this period are expected to remain near 30 degrees Celsius for the maximum and 20 degrees Celsius for the minimum.

Thursday’s rainfall caused waterlogging on roads in Bengaluru and along the Bengaluru–Hosur corridor, according to the report. Commuters faced delays and movement was disrupted in several areas. The latest forecast is therefore significant for the city’s road network, where intense showers can quickly affect traffic and travel conditions.

The rainfall follows a relatively warmer start to the week, with increased sunshine reported before the latest spell. The onset of the northeast monsoon has also been noted in Karnataka. The IMD forecast remains the official guidance for rainfall and weather conditions over the coming days, with the next major period of concern being October 17 to 19.
