Pune ESIC Medical College Gets 50 MBBS Seats From 2027

Pune ESIC Medical College planned at an ESIC hospital, representing new medical education infrastructure.

Pune will get a new ESIC Medical College with 50 MBBS seats from the 2027-28 academic year, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday after the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare approved an appeal related to the proposed institution.

The college will be attached to the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital in Pune. Fadnavis announced the approval during his visit to the city and later shared the information through his social media accounts, according to a report by Sakal-Pune.

The proposal to convert the ESIC Hospital into a medical college had earlier been rejected twice by the National Medical Commission, the Chief Minister said. An appeal was subsequently submitted to the Union Health Ministry. The appeal has now been accepted, allowing the college to receive approval for 50 MBBS seats.

“An appeal was filed with the Union Minister in this regard. Accepting that appeal, approval has been given to the medical college for 50 MBBS seats,” Fadnavis said while speaking to the media, according to the report.

Admissions are scheduled to begin from the 2027-28 academic year. The announcement establishes the proposed college’s initial intake but does not provide further details in the supplied report on the hospital’s current bed capacity, the campus facilities, admission process or the timeline for academic and clinical infrastructure upgrades.

The development adds a medical education component to an existing ESIC hospital facility in Pune. ESIC hospitals provide healthcare services for insured workers and their dependants, while a medical college can also expand the institutional base for undergraduate medical training and clinical education. The extent of that expansion will depend on the facilities and approvals required before admissions begin.

Fadnavis credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, Union minister Murlidhar Mohol and Maharashtra minister Madhuri Misal for their efforts in securing the approval. He described the decision as fulfilling a long-standing demand from Pune residents.

The next formal milestone is the commencement of admissions in the 2027-28 academic year. Further information on the college’s regulatory clearances, infrastructure readiness and admission procedures was not included in the report.
