CBI Raids in Pune Lead to Munitions India Executive’s Arrest

CBI raids in Pune linked to a case involving a Munitions India executive director

The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested an executive director of Munitions India Limited and two private individuals in an alleged bribery case linked to government contracts, with raids in Pune, Bengaluru, Mysuru and Delhi yielding more than Rs 2.25 crore in unaccounted cash and documents, according to a report by Sakal – Pune.

The executive director was based at Munitions India’s headquarters in Yerawada, on Pune’s Nagar Road. The CBI registered a bribery case against the officer on October 12, alleging that the official misused the position to favour private contractors and suppliers in government work. The officer is accused of colluding with contractors and accepting bribes in return for favourable decisions.

Following a preliminary inquiry, the CBI arrested the executive director and two other private individuals on Tuesday, October 13, the report said. The supplied report does not identify the two private individuals or provide details of the specific contracts, suppliers or decisions under investigation.

The CBI subsequently searched the executive director’s residence in Pune. Investigators seized Rs 1.73 crore in cash during the search, according to the report. Searches at properties in Mysuru, Bengaluru and Delhi resulted in the seizure of approximately Rs 50 lakh more, along with documents described as important to the investigation.

The combined seizure is reported to exceed Rs 2.25 crore. The CBI is investigating whether additional people were involved in the alleged bribery network, its officials said, according to Sakal – Pune. The report does not state whether the seized cash has been formally linked to specific transactions or whether charges have been filed beyond the bribery case mentioned in the report.

The case places scrutiny on procurement and decision-making within a government-owned defence manufacturing company. Munitions India Limited operates under the Ministry of Defence and supplies ammunition, weapons and explosives primarily to the Indian armed forces and paramilitary forces. Its procurement decisions therefore involve public resources as well as production requirements tied to national security institutions.

Munitions India was established in October 2021 after the Union government reorganised the former Ordnance Factory structure into new government-owned defence companies. The company’s production role means that contractors and suppliers are part of an institutional chain supporting the manufacture and supply of defence materials.

The Pune connection is significant because the company’s headquarters and the residence searched by investigators are both located in the city. The case also extends beyond Pune through searches in Karnataka and Delhi, indicating that the investigation covers properties and records in multiple locations. The CBI’s next steps, including the examination of seized documents and the identification of any further accused, will determine the scope of the case.
