TNSTC Bus LED Board Displays Political Slogans, Sparks Inquiry Calls

A Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus in Cuddalore district displayed unauthorised political slogans on its electronic destination board, prompting criticism and demands for a departmental inquiry into how the official public transport system was used.

The bus, bearing registration number TN 32 M 5032, belongs to the Villupuram division and operates from the Virudhachalam depot, according to a report by the Times of India. It was travelling from Trichy towards Puducherry on a route passing through Perambalur, Tittakudi, Virudhachalam, Neyveli and Cuddalore.

While the bus was moving along the Trichy–Chennai National Highway, its external LED display did not show the standard route or destination information. Instead, the board began displaying political lines targeting the DMK and its leadership, including the phrase “Om Sakthi Parasakthi… DMK Oru Theeya Sakthi”, according to the report.

Motorists and passengers noticed the display and recorded videos on their mobile phones. The videos were subsequently circulated widely on social media, bringing attention to the incident beyond the bus route and raising questions about access controls over electronic signage on state-run buses.

Destination boards on public buses are intended to provide operational information such as route numbers, stops and final destinations. The reported appearance of political messaging on the TNSTC display has therefore prompted concern about whether the content was changed manually, through a technical system, or by an individual with access to the vehicle’s signage equipment. The available report does not establish how the text appeared on the board.

The incident has drawn criticism from members of the public and political observers, who have called for a thorough departmental inquiry. They have also demanded stringent measures to prevent unauthorised content from appearing on official transport systems in the future.

The episode places attention on a practical governance issue within public transport: electronic passenger-information systems must remain accurate, functional and protected from misuse while buses are in service. When a destination board carries unrelated content, commuters may be denied essential route information and the credibility of the transport agency’s public-facing systems can be affected.

The reported bus was operated by the TNSTC’s Villupuram division and was linked to the Virudhachalam depot. The source report does not provide details of any departmental action, suspension, police complaint or official explanation. The next formal step sought by critics is an inquiry into the incident and the safeguards governing TNSTC bus LED displays.
