Gujarat Rain Alert: Showers Forecast as Ahmedabad Nears 39°C

The Gujarat rain alert issued for 19 October covers parts of South Gujarat, Saurashtra and nearby Union Territories, even as Ahmedabad continues to experience unusually high October temperatures. The weather department has forecast isolated rainfall in Navsari, Valsad, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Diu, Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The forecast comes as Gujarat experiences persistent heat despite the withdrawal of the monsoon. According to the report by Divya Bhaskar, temperatures across the state are expected to show little significant change over the next seven days. A trough becoming active is expected to create the possibility of scattered rain in the identified districts.

Ahmedabad recorded a maximum temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius, taking the city to its highest October level in nine years, the report said. The previous comparable high was 39.4 degrees Celsius in October 2017. In October 2024, Ahmedabad recorded a maximum temperature of 38.4 degrees Celsius.

The report said temperatures this year have been running 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal. Ahmedabad’s maximum temperature was expected to reach around 39 degrees Celsius on 14 October, according to the weather department’s forecast cited by the publication.

The combination of late-season rainfall in some districts and continued heat in Ahmedabad reflects uneven weather conditions across Gujarat. The rain forecast is limited to isolated showers rather than a broad return of the monsoon, with the affected locations concentrated in southern Gujarat, Saurashtra and adjoining Union Territories.

The state’s seasonal rainfall has also remained below normal, according to the report. Gujarat has received 89.19% of its average seasonal rainfall so far this year. The figure is relevant to water availability because reservoir storage remains uneven across the state.

The Sardar Sarovar reservoir on the Narmada has 99.83% water storage, while the other 206 dams together have recorded about 70% storage, the report said. Only 21 dams are full. As many as 79 dams have less than 25% storage as of the date of the report.

The weather department’s seven-day outlook therefore combines two distinct conditions: a possibility of scattered rain in selected districts on 19 October and no major change in the broader temperature pattern. The next significant update will be the department’s district-level forecast and rainfall observations for South Gujarat, Saurashtra and the adjoining Union Territories.
