Construction of the 45-km Aizawl western bypass has reached 33.61%, prompting Union minister of state for Development of North Eastern Region Sukanta Majumdar to direct the contractor to add labour and machinery and meet the January 16, 2028 completion deadline.
Majumdar reviewed the project during a visit to the Sihhmui base camp, where he met officials of the Mizoram Public Works Department and representatives of RG Buildwell Engineers Pvt Ltd, the contractor executing the road. The bypass is being built under the PM-DeVINE scheme and is intended to support Aizawl’s planned expansion while reducing congestion within the city.
The road will begin at Sihhmui in Sairang and terminate at Muallungthu. According to PWD officials, it will improve connections to Lengpui Airport, Sairang Railway Station, the Industrial Growth Centre at Luangmual, Zoram Medical College and Hospital, and southern Mizoram. It will also pass close to the approach road to Reiek village, a major tourism destination in the state.
Majumdar also suggested that the state government consider building an additional approach road connecting Aizawl city to the bypass using state funds. The proposed link would determine how effectively residents and city traffic can access the new corridor once the main road is completed.
PWD officials said the improved route could support tourism, make it easier to transport agricultural produce and create better livelihood opportunities for people living in surrounding areas. These benefits depend on the bypass being connected to existing urban and regional road networks rather than functioning as an isolated peripheral route.
The current project does not include tourism-oriented road infrastructure or beautification around the bypass, officials said. They requested that a separate project covering these components be considered under the upcoming PM-DeVINE scheme. Officials said such additions could improve the visual appeal of the corridor and enhance road safety for motorists and tourists.
The Centre sanctioned ₹500 crore for the bypass on February 10, 2024. RG Buildwell Engineers was selected as the contractor, and the notice to commence work was issued on January 16, 2026. The latest review therefore places the project in its early construction phase, with more than two years remaining before the scheduled completion date.
The next implementation priority set during the review is faster deployment of labour and machinery at the construction site. The project’s progress will be measured against the January 2028 deadline as work continues across the Sihhmui–Muallungthu alignment.
