Pune University Hostel Case: Two Students Booked After Night Entry

Pune University hostel building linked to a reported night-entry case

Two students have been booked after allegedly entering the women’s hostel at Savitribai Phule Pune University in Pune at night and attempting to intimidate students, according to Chaturshringi police. The case has brought renewed attention to access control and the safety of women students in university residential facilities.

The incident reportedly took place at about 11 pm on October 11. Police said Pramod Rathod and Omkar Gore, both residents of the university’s boys’ hostel in the Department of Education, entered the women’s hostel premises despite restrictions barring male students and other unauthorised persons from entering the area.

The two students allegedly engaged in what the complaint describes as moral policing and attempted to threaten or intimidate women students. The allegations have not been tested in court.

The complaint was filed by Sampat Patil, a 51-year-old security guard working on the university campus. According to the report, Patil intervened after noticing the incident and subsequently approached Chaturshringi police station.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case against Rathod and Gore under Section 329(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The source report identifies the alleged unauthorised entry and intimidation at the hostel as the basis for the police action.

The incident has placed the university’s residential security arrangements under scrutiny. Women’s hostels operate through controlled access rules intended to restrict entry by unauthorised people, particularly at night. The reported breach raises questions about how such restrictions are enforced, how quickly security staff can respond and what procedures are followed when students are found inside restricted premises.

The case also highlights the difference between maintaining hostel discipline and allowing students to police the conduct of other residents. Any inquiry into alleged misconduct on a university campus ordinarily falls within the responsibility of the institution and authorised authorities, rather than individual students entering a restricted hostel area. In this case, however, the available report only records the allegations and the police action; it does not provide the university’s response or details of any internal disciplinary proceedings.

Police Sub-Inspector Umesh Koli is conducting the further investigation. The next steps will depend on the investigation into the complaint, the statements recorded by police and any action taken by the university under its own campus and hostel regulations.
