Bengaluru Pink Line Targets March 2027 Launch Despite Delays

Bengaluru Pink Line underground metro construction with tunnel infrastructure and rail systems work

Bengaluru’s Pink Line, connecting Kalena Agrahara with Nagawara, is expected to begin metro services by March 2027, even as several critical works remain pending on the 21.25-kilometre corridor, Prajavani reported on Wednesday.

The project includes more than 13.7 kilometres of underground alignment. While tunnelling work on the underground section has been completed, the corridor is not yet ready for passenger operations because track installation and multiple railway systems are still in progress.

The remaining works include the installation of tracks, third rail equipment, signalling, ventilation and fire-safety systems. These components are essential for converting a completed tunnel into an operational metro route, and their progress will determine whether the March 2027 target can be met.

The Pink Line is planned to connect Kalena Agrahara in south Bengaluru with Nagawara in the north-eastern part of the city. Its alignment will provide a cross-city connection between areas that currently depend heavily on road transport and existing interchange-based travel.

According to the report, the delay has not been linked to a single unfinished activity. Instead, the project continues to involve several stages of systems and infrastructure work after the completion of tunnelling. The pending works include both passenger-facing railway infrastructure and safety systems required before services can begin.

The completion of tunnelling is an important construction milestone, but it does not by itself indicate that a metro corridor is ready for public use. Trackwork must be completed before trains can operate, while signalling and third rail systems are required for train movement and power supply. Ventilation and fire-safety installations are particularly important for the underground portions of the route.

The March 2027 expectation therefore depends on the pace at which these remaining works are completed and integrated. The report identified the progress of the Pink Line, the pending activities and the challenges before the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited as the central issues affecting the project timeline.

For commuters, the operational date will matter more than the completion of any single construction package. Until the track, power, signalling, ventilation and fire-safety systems are installed and made operational, the corridor cannot begin regular passenger services.

Prajavani’s report did not provide a revised phase-wise completion schedule for each pending system. It also did not state whether the March 2027 target had been formally confirmed through a separate BMRCL notification. The next significant milestone will be the completion and integration of the remaining systems on the Kalena Agrahara–Nagawara corridor.
