A police station in-charge in Bhopal has been suspended and placed under a departmental inquiry after a video allegedly showed him abusing tribal students during a protest over issues affecting the community, according to a police official quoted by PTI.
The incident took place on Tuesday during a demonstration organised by the youth wing of the Gondwana Gantantra Party. Protesters were seen chanting “Jai Johar”, a traditional greeting used by tribal communities. The video circulated on social media and purportedly showed Ratan Singh Parihar, in-charge of the Misrod police station, objecting to the slogan and using abusive language against the protesters.
Bhopal Police commissioner Sanjay Kumar ordered Parihar’s suspension following the incident and directed that a departmental inquiry be conducted. The inquiry will examine the facts of the case, after which further action will be taken based on its findings, the official said.
The action places police conduct during public demonstrations under scrutiny, particularly when officers are dealing with students and members of a historically marginalised community. The reported confrontation occurred at a protest where participants were raising concerns about issues faced by tribal students. The supplied report does not specify the number of protesters or provide details of any injuries, arrests or property damage linked to the demonstration.
The video prompted demands for action from the Congress and tribal organisations. Umang Singhar, the Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, described the alleged remarks as serious and condemnable. He said “Johar” was a symbol of tribal culture, identity, self-respect and honour, rather than an abusive expression.
Singhar also said that the power of the police uniform should not be used to humiliate citizens and called for accountability if the officer had misused his position. He demanded that a first information report be registered against Parihar and that strict action be taken.
The police department’s immediate response has therefore focused on administrative action and fact-finding rather than a final determination of misconduct. The departmental inquiry will establish the circumstances surrounding the exchange and determine whether additional action is warranted. The report does not state whether an FIR has been registered or when the inquiry is expected to conclude.
