The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has set October 31 as the deadline for utility companies to submit excavation proposals along the route of an international cycling competition scheduled for January. No excavation will be permitted on the route after the deadline, while the roads will remain protected from excavation for five years after completion of the roadworks.
The decision was taken during a joint meeting involving Additional Municipal Commissioner Omprakash Diwate, the PMC road department, Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd (MNGL), Dinesh Engineers and other concerned companies. The meeting reviewed pending proposals for laying utility lines along the cycling route.
The civic administration has directed utility agencies to examine alternative alignments so that construction activity does not obstruct the competition route. Companies have been asked to conduct joint site inspections with PMC officials, assess whether work can be completed through the existing road alignment and examine the possibility of laying cables along the opposite side of the road.
Applicants must carry out the joint inspections immediately and submit their work plans within a day, according to the PMC directions. Excavation permissions will be granted only in exceptional cases until October 31. The deadline is intended to give agencies a final window to complete essential utility works before the route is prepared for the January event.
The PMC has also instructed companies to increase manpower and complete pending excavation and road restoration work at the earliest. The requirement places responsibility on utility agencies to coordinate their work schedules with the municipal road department rather than undertaking separate interventions that could delay reinstatement or affect the competition route.
The five-year restriction after completion of the roadworks is linked to the roads’ defect liability period. During this period, the civic administration intends to keep the newly restored roads in good condition and prevent repeated cuts that could damage the surface or undermine restoration work.
The PMC said companies are also laying cross-ducts at necessary locations. These ducts are intended to accommodate utility lines and reduce the need for future road excavations. The measure reflects the municipality’s effort to coordinate utility installation before road surfaces are fully restored, although the immediate focus remains on completing pending works before the October 31 deadline.
The cycling competition is scheduled for January, but the source report does not identify the event or specify the full route. The PMC’s next steps are the immediate joint inspections, submission of utility work plans within a day and completion of eligible excavation and restoration before the October 31 cut-off.
