Pune RTO vehicle inspections have found violations in 37 of the 134 private vehicles registered outside Maharashtra and checked across Pune and nearby areas between October 5 and 12. The enforcement drive, which targets out-of-state vehicles regularly used in Maharashtra, will continue until October 17.
The regional transport department detained three vehicles during the inspections and collected fines totalling Rs 21,000, according to a report by Punekar News. Officials are checking whether vehicle owners have complied with registration requirements, paid applicable motor vehicle taxes and maintained other mandatory documents.
The drive focuses on private vehicles registered in other states but being used in Maharashtra on a regular basis. Under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, a vehicle registered in another state and used in Maharashtra for more than one year must be re-registered in the state. The owner must also pay the prescribed motor vehicle tax.
The registration requirement is intended to ensure that vehicles used on Maharashtra’s roads are brought within the state’s regulatory and tax framework when their use extends beyond the permitted period. Vehicle owners must also comply with the relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
The inspections cover Pune and surrounding areas, but the report does not specify the individual locations where vehicles were checked or provide a breakdown of the violations recorded. It also does not state how many of the inspected vehicles had been used in Maharashtra for more than one year or identify the states in which the vehicles were originally registered.
For vehicle owners, the immediate compliance requirements include keeping registration records, motor vehicle tax payments and other mandatory documents up to date. The Pune Regional Transport Office has urged owners to cooperate with officials during the special drive and to produce the required documents when asked.
The enforcement action will remain in place until October 17. The RTO’s continuing inspections will determine whether further vehicles are detained or additional fines are collected during the remainder of the drive.
