Pune School Locking Case Puts Child Safety Under Police Probe

Pune school locking case involving a kindergarten corridor and child-safety investigation

Pune police have registered a case against a teacher and the manager of a kindergarten on B T Kawade Road in Ghorpadi after a three-year-old boy was allegedly locked inside a school washroom for being “too playful” in class, according to a complaint filed by the child’s mother.

The incident allegedly took place between 11.15am and 2.15pm on September 8 at the EuroKids kindergarten. The boy, aged three years and four months, was attending nursery at the school when he was allegedly confined inside the washroom, the complaint stated.

According to the report, the child’s 38-year-old mother, who is a professor, was informed about the incident when she went to pick him up from the school. The child subsequently told her that he had been locked inside the washroom.

The mother reportedly confronted the teacher, who allegedly admitted to locking the child up for some time. The teacher is reported to have said that the boy was being too playful and that there was no other space available to keep him.

The parents then sought access to the school’s CCTV footage. After repeated follow-ups, the school management allegedly showed them the footage on September 21. The parents said the recording appeared to capture the teacher locking the child inside the washroom.

However, when the parents requested a copy of the footage the following day, the management reportedly told them that the recording had been overwritten. The parents suspect that the footage may have been deliberately deleted, although that allegation remains part of the complaint and has not been established by the police investigation.

Mundhwa police have registered a case against the teacher and the school manager under the Juvenile Justice Act. The police are investigating the circumstances of the alleged confinement, the conduct of the school management and the availability of CCTV evidence.

The case places attention on the responsibility of early-childhood institutions to maintain safe supervision and proper incident records for young children. At this stage, the allegations have been made through the police complaint, and the investigation will determine the sequence of events and whether further action is warranted.

The police investigation is ongoing. The report did not provide details of any arrest, further sections added to the case or an official statement from the school management.
