The BJP won 38 of the 44 seats in the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections, securing a clear majority in the civic body, according to results declared by the Gujarat State Election Commission on Tuesday. The Congress finished with five seats, while one independent candidate was elected.
The result gives the BJP control of the municipal corporation after it won 41 seats in the previous election held in October 2021. The Congress had secured two seats in that election, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had won one. AAP failed to win any seat this time.
The election was held across 11 wards, with 130 candidates contesting the 44 seats. Counting of votes for the Gandhinagar civic body and two other local authorities began at 9 am on Tuesday, with the results announced by the State Election Commission during the day.
Gandhinagar has around 2.59 lakh registered voters. The city recorded a voter turnout of 59.25%, according to figures released by the State Election Commission. The turnout indicates that more than half of the electorate participated in the municipal election.
The outcome leaves the BJP with a substantially larger presence in the GMC than its principal rival. The Congress improved its tally from two seats in 2021 to five, but remained well short of the BJP’s total. The independent candidate’s win accounts for the remaining seat in the 44-member corporation.
The election result will determine the political composition of Gandhinagar’s civic administration as it oversees municipal responsibilities across the state capital. The State Election Commission’s declared results are the immediate basis for the formation of the corporation’s elected house.
