Kolkata Trafficking Case Ends in 10-Year Terms for Four

Kolkata trafficking case linked to a Barasat court hearing and child protection investigation

A Barasat Special POCSO Court has sentenced four people to 10 years in prison each for trafficking a 14-year-old Bangladeshi girl to India and exploiting her in Kolkata, according to a report by Bartaman Patrika. The court also imposed a fine of ₹20,000 on each convict and ordered that ₹5 lakh be paid as compensation to the survivor.

The sentences were announced on Monday by the judge of the Special POCSO Court in Barasat. The four convicts were identified as Mizanur Gazi, Ruby Akhtar, also known as Priyanka Ghosh, Samir Roy, also known as Dipak, and Swapan Guin, also known as Bapi.

According to details reported from court sources, the girl was a resident of Noakhali in Bangladesh. She first came into contact on social media with Ruby, who was based in Baguiati. The report said the girl was subsequently introduced to Ruby’s brother Nazmul and was drawn into a relationship through which plans were allegedly made to bring her to India. Mizanur, described as Ruby’s friend, was also in contact with the girl by phone and allegedly sent her money online.

The girl was allegedly brought into India through an unauthorised route late on April 16, 2024, with Mizanur’s assistance. The report said she was subsequently confined and subjected to sexual and physical abuse before being sold to a brothel in Kolkata. These details formed part of the prosecution case in the proceedings.

The matter came to the attention of Indian authorities through the Bangladesh High Commission, which informed the Indian side. Baguiati police then registered a case on their own initiative, arrested the four accused and rescued the girl. She was later sent to a shelter home, according to the report.

The case illustrates the cross-border and city-level links that can shape trafficking investigations. A contact established online in Bangladesh, movement across an unauthorised route, accommodation and confinement in the city, and the alleged transfer of a minor into Kolkata’s sex trade were all part of the prosecution narrative reported from the court. The sequence also required coordination involving diplomatic authorities, state police, the local police station and child-care institutions.

The court convicted the four accused on Saturday after considering the statements of 19 witnesses and other evidence. Special Public Prosecutor Biswanath Ghosh said each convict had received a 10-year prison sentence. The court’s compensation order adds a financial remedy for the survivor alongside the criminal punishment.

The reported judgment does not provide further details on the role or legal status of Nazmul, who was mentioned in the account of how the girl was introduced to the accused. The four sentences and the compensation order remain the immediate outcomes identified in the case report.
