Assam Drug Crackdown Expands as 48 Arrested in Two Districts

Assam drug crackdown with police vehicles during an operation in an upper Assam district

Police in Assam’s Dibrugarh and Golaghat districts arrested 48 people in separate anti-narcotics operations over the past 24 to 48 hours, registering 13 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and seizing five vehicles allegedly linked to drug trafficking.

In Dibrugarh, police arrested 22 alleged drug offenders during a 48-hour operation involving raids at multiple locations, according to district police. The action resulted in the registration of 13 cases under the NDPS Act, the law that governs offences relating to narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

“Over the past 48 hours, we have arrested 22 drug offenders and registered 13 cases under the NDPS Act. Our drive against drug trafficking will continue with action aimed at those involved in the illegal trade,” Dibrugarh superintendent of police Abhijit Gurav said on Monday.

Dibrugarh police also issued a freezing order under Section 68F of the NDPS Act, 1985, against property worth Rs 1.43 crore that they alleged had been illegally acquired. Police said the action was the first of its kind in the district.

The property allegedly belongs to Manoj Gogoi and his wife Gulapi Gogoi, who were recently arrested in connection with the seizure of a commercial quantity of drugs in Tingkhong. The couple is currently in judicial custody, police said.

In neighbouring Golaghat, police arrested 26 alleged drug offenders during operations conducted over the previous 24 hours. Nine arrests were made in Golaghat town, while 17 others were reported from different parts of the district, including Bokakhat, Sarupathar, Dergaon, Furkating and Numaligarh.

Golaghat superintendent of police Swapnaneel Deka said the arrests were made during operations across the district. Police also seized five vehicles allegedly connected with drug traffickers, although the report did not provide details of the vehicles or the specific substances involved.

The two district operations combine criminal investigation with action against suspected assets and transport used in the illegal trade. The freezing order in Dibrugarh is being pursued under the financial provisions of the NDPS Act, while the arrests and case registrations will proceed through the criminal justice process.

The latest action covers several urban and semi-urban centres across upper Assam, including Dibrugarh town, Golaghat town and locations along the district network connecting Bokakhat, Sarupathar, Dergaon, Furkating and Numaligarh. Police have not disclosed the total quantity of narcotics seized in the operations described in the report.

Dibrugarh police said their drive against drug trafficking would continue. Further legal proceedings in the registered NDPS cases and the property-freezing action are expected to determine the status of the accused and the assets involved.
