The India Meteorological Department has extended its yellow alert for hot and humid weather in Panaji through October 13 after the city recorded a maximum temperature of 36.6°C, or 5.1°C above normal. The warning comes as the southwest monsoon continues to withdraw from parts of India, including Goa.
IMD had also issued a yellow alert for October 12. The department classifies hot and humid weather as conditions in which the maximum temperature is at least 3°C above normal and humidity remains above normal.
Mormugao recorded a maximum temperature of 35.8°C, which was 4.5°C above normal. Panaji’s minimum temperature was 25°C, or 0.7°C above normal, while Mormugao recorded a minimum of 24.4°C, 0.3°C below normal.
IMD data showed relative humidity at 59% in Panaji, 21 percentage points below normal, and 74% in Mormugao, 12 percentage points below normal. Despite the lower-than-normal humidity readings reported in both locations, the department’s alert covers the hot and humid weather conditions forecast for Panaji.
The weather office has advised residents to stay hydrated, wear light clothing and limit exposure to direct sunlight during afternoon hours. These precautions are particularly relevant for people working outdoors and residents who may face prolonged heat exposure in areas with limited shade.
The latest weather update said conditions were becoming favourable for the further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from parts of eastern India, the northern peninsula and large parts of northeast India over the next two days. The withdrawal line currently passes through Supaul, Ranchi, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Bijapur, Hyderabad, Belagavi and Panaji, among other locations.
The yellow alert remains in force for Panaji on October 13, with the IMD’s heat precautions continuing to apply during the warning period.
