Sadahalli Underpass Work Begins to Cut Bengaluru Airport Road Delays

Sadahalli underpass construction on Bengaluru airport road with traffic near the junction

The Sadahalli underpass project has begun on Ballari Road, the main route connecting Bengaluru with Kempegowda International Airport, with the National Highways Authority of India building a 750-metre, six-lane passage to remove the last traffic signal on the highway’s main carriageway.

The ₹35-crore project at Sadahalli Junction is expected to be completed by mid-2027, according to an NHAI press release. The junction currently serves airport-bound traffic as well as motorists travelling from Sadahalli and nearby localities towards Bengaluru and Devanahalli.

Traffic police said no diversions had been imposed at the junction so far. They had been informed that NHAI would execute the work in phases because of the high volume of traffic using the airport road.

The project is intended to allow through traffic on Ballari Road to pass without stopping at the signal. For airport users, the junction is one of the points where uninterrupted movement on the corridor is currently interrupted. Local traffic will also be able to use the grade-separated crossing to travel between Sadahalli, the city and Devanahalli.

NHAI is also carrying out related service-road works near the Indian Air Force station in Yelahanka. The authority has said that cut-and-cover work for the service road in that area will begin after the Aero India show in February 2027.

The Yelahanka service-road project is being implemented in phases. Phase I, covering the initial 240-metre stretch between IAF Gates 1 and 2, along with associated utility and compound works, has been completed. Phase II, covering the stretch between Gates 2 and 3, is under way and is targeted for completion by December 2026.

The service road on the domestic side, between Gates 5 and 6, will be taken up after the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation hands over encumbrance-free land to NHAI. The land handover is therefore a prerequisite for that section of the work to proceed.

The Sadahalli underpass and the Yelahanka service-road works form part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic movement along the airport corridor. The immediate construction plan at Sadahalli will continue in phases, while the next major milestone for the junction is the targeted completion of the underpass by mid-2027.
