RIMS Ranchi Flyover Plan Targets Ambulance Delays and Traffic

RIMS Ranchi flyover proposal aims to ease traffic near the hospital campus and improve ambulance access.

The Jharkhand health department has proposed a flyover or underpass and an alternative road network at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi to reduce congestion and protect the movement of ambulances, patients and emergency vehicles on the hospital campus.

Additional chief secretary of the health department Ajoy Kumar Singh wrote to the state road construction department on Monday, seeking necessary action on the proposal. The department has also sent a copy of the communication to the RIMS director, according to a statement.

The proposal calls for a flyover or underpass linking the northern and southern sections of the RIMS campus. The connection is intended to improve movement between the Trauma Centre, Super Speciality blocks and other medical units within the hospital complex.

A separate flyover and dedicated road have also been proposed for vehicles travelling from the RIMS gate on Bariatu Road towards Kokar. This route would allow through-traffic to bypass the hospital campus instead of sharing internal roads with patients, hospital staff, ambulances and visitors.

At present, the road connecting Kokar passes through the RIMS campus and carries both general traffic and vehicles heading to the hospital. The resulting traffic movement often causes congestion and affects access for ambulances and emergency services, an RIMS official said.

The health department said the proposed infrastructure would reduce congestion inside the campus, improve emergency response time and strengthen traffic management at the state’s premier government healthcare institution. RIMS receives patients from across Jharkhand, making access to its trauma, speciality and super-speciality facilities dependent not only on medical capacity but also on the movement of vehicles through the campus.

The proposal has not yet received final approval, and no funding arrangement or implementation schedule has been announced. Singh said that details relating to funding and timelines would be decided after the proposal is approved. The road construction department is expected to take necessary action on the request, while the RIMS administration has been informed of the proposed changes.

The plan is intended to separate hospital-bound traffic from vehicles using the Bariatu Road-Kokar connection and to create a faster internal link between key medical facilities. Its next formal step will depend on the state road construction department’s action and the approval process outlined by the health department.
