Pune’s Run for Unity Marathon will return on November 1, with organisers expecting more than 40,000 participants across multiple race categories and seeking travel arrangements from Maha Metro for the event day.
Member of Parliament Muralidhar Mohol announced the event details on Saturday. He said 26,000 people had already registered, compared with about 25,000 registrations for last year’s edition, and that participation was likely to cross the 40,000 mark this year.
The event will be held to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It will include a beginner run, 3km, 5km, 10km, 10-mile and half-marathon categories. International runners and athletes are also expected to take part, according to Mohol.
All categories will start in phases from Alka Talkies Chowk and finish at the FC campus. The staggered starts and common route endpoints will make movement arrangements a significant part of the event’s operation, although the report did not provide details of road closures, traffic diversions or timings for individual races.
The marathon will carry the message “Nasha Mukta Yuva for Vikasit Bharat”. Cash prizes totalling Rs 10 lakh will be distributed to winners across the different categories. The organisers have not publicly detailed the prize split between races in the information available.
The expected increase in participation means the event will involve substantially more runners than last year’s reported registration figure. For residents and commuters travelling through central Pune on November 1, the start and finish locations, phased race schedule and arrangements for reaching the venue will be important operational details.
The organisers have approached Maha Metro to make adequate travel arrangements for participants on the event day.
