Delhi Deploys 2,947 Bus Marshals as Women’s Safety Network Expands

The Delhi government has deployed 2,947 bus marshals in Delhi Transport Corporation buses and is operating 56 special buses for women as part of a citywide safety programme, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said in a statement on Saturday.

Of the 56 special buses, 15 operate during the evening shift. Armed women police personnel have been deployed on these services after 5 pm, according to the Chief Minister. The measures are intended to strengthen assistance for women using public transport, particularly during evening travel.

The government said all buses have been connected to the Bus Management System, with panic alarms, live CCTV feeds and GPS tracking monitored round the clock through a control centre. The system is designed to provide authorities with operational visibility and an emergency response mechanism across the bus network.

The Department of Women and Child Development will soon introduce additional accommodation facilities for working women in Vishwas Nagar and Rohini, Gupta said. The proposed facilities are part of a wider set of measures covering women’s access to transport, accommodation and emergency support.

The Chief Minister also referred to child-protection measures in the capital. Child Welfare Committees and Juvenile Justice Boards are functioning as statutory bodies, while Sub-Divisional Magistrates have been designated as Child Marriage Prohibition Officers.

Around 1.5 lakh CCTV cameras are available in schools, according to the statement. Self-defence training is being provided in 1,397 schools under the Rani Lakshmibai Self-Defence Training Programme. The measures combine surveillance, institutional child protection and school-based training within the government’s stated safety framework.

Road infrastructure and public surveillance were also included in the announcement. The Public Works Department has installed 96,000 streetlights on roads, comprising 45,000 high-pressure sodium vapour lights and 51,000 LED lights. The department has 2,53,983 CCTV cameras operational, Gupta said.

Citizens can register complaints through the toll-free number 1908 and the PWD Seva Portal. The government also highlighted the Women’s Helpline 181, DTC services and other child-protection measures as parts of a multi-layered safety network.

Gupta said the government was strengthening systems to provide prompt assistance to women during a crisis, improve access to essential facilities for working women and create safer conditions for children to learn and develop. The next steps identified in the statement are the introduction of accommodation facilities in Vishwas Nagar and Rohini and the continued operation of monitoring, complaint and emergency-response systems across the city.
