Vijayawada Saras Fair Gets Special Drainage Plan Ahead of Opening

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is installing a special drainage system at the national-level Saras fair in Bhavanipuram ahead of its scheduled opening on October 13, aiming to prevent wastewater stagnation and maintain hygienic conditions during the event.

VMC commissioner H.M. Dhyanachandra inspected preparations on Saturday and directed officials to ensure that essential facilities were completed before visitors arrive. The fair is expected to attract people from various states, increasing demand on sanitation and public facilities at the venue.

The commissioner instructed engineering officials to establish a dedicated drainage network for the continuous flow and disposal of wastewater. Underground drainage facilities are to be provided wherever necessary, with officials asked to ensure that the system functions efficiently throughout the fair.

Dhyanachandra also directed authorities to monitor the drainage arrangements regularly so that blockages or other problems can be identified and addressed promptly. The instructions are intended to prevent stagnant wastewater from affecting visitors and the surrounding fairground area.

Sanitation and health teams have been asked to remove accumulated waste regularly and maintain cleanliness across the fairgrounds and nearby areas. The commissioner stressed coordination between all departments involved to protect public health and avoid inconvenience to visitors.

The inspection was attended by chief engineer P. Satyakumari, executive engineer Srinivas, chief medical health officer Dr Ch. Nirmala Glory, assistant medical health officer Dr P. Annapurna and deputy commissioner (revenue) G. Srujana, among others. The drainage and sanitation arrangements are to be monitored as the fair approaches its October 13 start.
