The Criminal Investigation Department arrested Suresh Rai on Saturday in the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level Examination irregularities case, adding another alleged member to the investigation into a syndicate accused of arranging access to the question paper and answers for candidates.
Rai, described by police sources as a key accused, is a native of Dugdha in Bokaro district. According to the Times of India report, investigators suspect that he and his son, Umesh Rai, were part of a network involved in providing candidates access to examination material before or during the recruitment process.
The arrest brings the father and son into the same investigation. The CID had arrested Umesh on August 28 and sent him to judicial custody. The report did not state when Suresh Rai would be produced before a court or whether investigators had recovered additional documents, devices or other evidence during the latest action.
The JSSC Combined Graduate Level Examination is part of the state’s public recruitment system. Allegations of question-paper access and answer arrangements therefore extend beyond individual candidates and raise questions about the security of the examination process, the functioning of intermediaries and the safeguards used to protect competitive selection.
For candidates, the case concerns the credibility of an examination in which access to the same question paper and answers would give an unfair advantage to those linked to the alleged syndicate. The available report does not establish how many candidates may have benefited, the scale of the alleged network, or whether the examination outcome will be affected.
The CID’s investigation is continuing through arrests and the examination of the alleged network. Further court proceedings and details released by the investigating agency are expected to clarify the specific role attributed to Suresh Rai and the evidence collected in the case.
