Raipur Traffic Hackathon Ideas Get Government Backing to Ease Congestion

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has said the state government will consider implementing practical recommendations from the Raipur Traffic Hackathon-2026 to address congestion, parking and road-safety problems at major junctions in the city.

Speaking at a felicitation ceremony organised by Chhattisgarh Police at Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium, Sai said technology, innovation and public participation were necessary to make traffic movement safer and smoother. He said the government would take steps to implement suggestions found to be useful and practical.

The seven-week hackathon, held between August 17 and September 27, examined traffic challenges at Tatibandh Chowk, Telibandha Marine Drive, Amapara Chowk, Lodhipara Chowk and Shankar Nagar. The exercise invited proposals on parking management, pedestrian safety, lane markings, public transport integration and congestion reduction.

The winning proposal, submitted by Kartikeya Pant, focused on the Shankar Nagar turning point and used a tactical urbanism approach. The proposal called for better use of existing road space, clearer lane markings, safer pedestrian areas and designated spaces for street vendors and autorickshaw drivers.

Tactical urbanism generally involves relatively quick and practical changes to existing streets and public spaces rather than waiting for large-scale construction. In the proposal discussed at the ceremony, the emphasis was on reorganising road space and improving movement conditions at an existing junction. The source report did not specify whether the proposal would be implemented in full or identify a project timeline.

Other participants proposed technology-led measures, including the use of artificial intelligence and Internet of Things systems. These suggestions included identifying traffic violations through cameras and creating priority corridors for ambulances. The proposals indicate that the hackathon addressed both physical street design and technology-based enforcement and traffic management.

NIT Raipur provided technical support for the hackathon. The involvement of the institute gave the exercise an institutional and technical component, while the public participation element allowed proposals to emerge from concerns affecting specific junctions and road users.

The chief minister’s statement places the next step with the government, which will assess the suggestions for usefulness and practicality before taking implementation-related action. No specific junction-level intervention, budget, executing agency or deadline was announced at the ceremony.

The event also marked the completion of the seven-week Cyber Jagriti Abhiyan. Police said the campaign reached more than 1.70 crore people through five lakh programmes. The traffic hackathon and the cyber-awareness campaign were both highlighted during the police-organised ceremony, but the government’s traffic-related announcement was specifically linked to the evaluation and possible adoption of practical hackathon recommendations.
