The Delhi Metro reopened entry and exit gates at all stations on Saturday night after a 25-hour security-related closure affected 45 stations across the network, including major interchange and central Delhi stations. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said interchange facilities at all concerned stations were also available.
In a service update issued late on Saturday, the DMRC announced that entry and exit gates at every station had reopened. “The entry and exit gates of all Metro Stations of the Delhi Metro network are now open. The interchange facility at all the concerned Metro stations is also available,” the corporation said.
The restrictions had begun at 9 pm on Friday ahead of a protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar. The closure of 45 stations continued until 10 pm on Saturday, four hours beyond the earlier scheduled reopening time of 6 pm.
Stations affected by the restrictions included Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Janpath, Mandi House, ITO, Kashmere Gate and New Delhi. These stations serve key government, commercial, interchange and public-transport destinations in the capital, making the prolonged restrictions significant for passengers travelling through central Delhi.
The curbs were imposed after a request from Delhi Police, which cited concerns over possible crowd movement towards sensitive locations. The restrictions coincided with heightened security arrangements around Jantar Mantar, where police personnel and barricades were deployed.
The DMRC had earlier revised its advisory by reducing the number of stations facing entry and exit restrictions from 57 to 45. Under the earlier arrangement, interchange facilities were permitted at the affected stations, except at New Delhi Metro station. The restrictions were linked to the planned demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision exercise. Police had denied permission for the gathering at Jantar Mantar.
With the latest DMRC update, normal entry, exit and interchange operations were restored across the network. The corporation’s announcement did not indicate any continuing station-level restrictions.
