Delhi Internet Shutdown Disrupts Maps, Payments and City Mobility

An Internet shutdown in central Delhi on October 10 disrupted navigation apps, digital payments, transport bookings and hotel access as security restrictions were imposed around a youth-led demonstration at Jantar Mantar, leaving commuters, tourists and autorickshaw drivers struggling across Connaught Place and nearby areas.

Passengers travelling to the protest said they were dropped several kilometres from their destinations after drivers lost access to navigation applications. Some were also unable to complete digital payments because mobile Internet services were unavailable. A passenger on Janpath told The Hindu that he could no longer check the route to Jantar Mantar, confirm the fare or pay the autorickshaw driver.

The disruption affected app-based mobility as well. Vikas, a protester who had booked a Rapido bike taxi, said he and the driver discovered after reaching the area that the Internet was not working. The driver dropped him at the nearest accessible location and agreed to accept payment later, after connectivity was restored.

For autorickshaw drivers operating in Connaught Place, the shutdown coincided with road restrictions that limited both app-based bookings and movement through the area. Jagjit, an autorickshaw driver, said he usually completed 30 to 40 trips within Connaught Place but received no bookings during the disruption. He added that blocked routes prevented drivers from picking up and dropping off passengers normally.

Tourists unfamiliar with central Delhi faced additional problems because essential travel and accommodation information was stored online. Near Shivaji Stadium metro station, a tourist couple with a hotel booking in Connaught Place said police personnel asked them to show proof of their reservation before allowing them to proceed. They were unable to open the booking confirmation in their email or hotel application because Internet access was unavailable.

The couple said they were forced to look for a location with connectivity so they could access their booking details and understand how to proceed. Other visitors arriving in the Capital were seen pulling suitcases along pavements while searching for accommodation after online booking platforms became inaccessible.

Madhav, who had travelled from Jhansi with his family, said they first struggled to find an autorickshaw to Connaught Place. After reaching the area, the family was unable to arrange a hotel and continued looking for a place to stay.

The reported disruption highlights how navigation, payments, mobility platforms, travel bookings and access verification have become closely linked to mobile connectivity in central Delhi. When services are suspended during security operations, the immediate effects extend beyond communication to street-level transport, tourism and access to commercial establishments.

The Internet restrictions were reported amid heightened security arrangements and road barricading ahead of the demonstration against the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. The available report does not specify the geographic limits or duration of the shutdown. The restrictions and connectivity status will determine when normal transport bookings, online payments and digital access to hotel reservations resume.
