Vijayawada Builds Special Drainage Network Ahead of Saras Fair

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is installing a special drainage network at the national-level Saras fairgrounds in Bhavanipuram ahead of the event’s October 13 opening, aiming to prevent wastewater stagnation and maintain hygienic conditions during the expected influx of visitors from several states.

VMC commissioner H.M. Dhyanachandra inspected preparations at Bhavanipuram on Saturday and directed officials to complete the required facilities before the fair begins. The arrangements include a system for the continuous flow and disposal of wastewater across the fairgrounds.

Engineering officials were instructed to provide underground drainage facilities wherever necessary and ensure that the network operates efficiently throughout the event. The commissioner also directed officials to monitor the system regularly so that drainage-related problems can be identified and addressed promptly.

The temporary infrastructure is being planned in response to the expected large turnout at the fair. While the municipal corporation has not disclosed the anticipated visitor count or the total length and capacity of the drainage network, the arrangements indicate that wastewater management is being treated as a key operational requirement for the event.

Dhyanachandra also directed sanitation and health teams to remove accumulated waste regularly and maintain cleanliness across the fairgrounds and adjoining areas. The instructions place drainage, solid-waste removal and public-health monitoring within a coordinated municipal response rather than treating them as separate event arrangements.

The commissioner stressed coordination among all departments involved to protect public health and avoid inconvenience to visitors. The inspection was attended by VMC chief engineer P. Satyakumari, executive engineer Srinivas, chief medical health officer Dr Ch. Nirmala Glory, assistant medical health officer Dr P. Annapurna and deputy commissioner (revenue) G. Srujana, among others.

The Saras fair is scheduled to begin on October 13. Municipal officials are expected to complete the special drainage, sanitation and health arrangements before visitors arrive.
