Delhi’s bus fleet is set to cross 7,000 on October 14, when the government is expected to induct 200 electric buses under the month-long Seva Sankalp Abhiyaan, according to an official cited by the Times of India. The expansion will add capacity to the capital’s public transport system as the government works to modernise bus services and reduce vehicular emissions.
The new buses will include both 12-metre and nine-metre models, allowing them to serve different commuter requirements across the city. The official said the induction would strengthen the Delhi Transport Corporation’s electric bus fleet and support the government’s stated objective of making public transport more accessible.
The fully electric buses will be low-floor and air-conditioned. They will also be equipped with CCTV cameras, panic buttons and real-time vehicle tracking systems. Accessibility features for persons with disabilities are part of the planned specifications.
The flag-off ceremony has been scheduled for October 14 as part of the Seva Sankalp Abhiyaan, which runs from September 17 to October 17. The campaign is linked to marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s completion of 25 years in public service, and includes initiatives focused on urban mobility and public transport infrastructure.
The planned addition comes as Delhi continues to rely heavily on bus services for daily travel. The Delhi Transport Corporation currently operates around 6,840 buses across 52 depots, including 5,088 electric buses and 1,752 CNG buses. The network serves approximately 40 lakh passengers on a normal day.
The government has set a longer-term target of expanding Delhi’s bus fleet to nearly 14,000 by 2028-29. The stated objective is to increase public transport capacity and encourage commuters to shift from private vehicles. The October 14 flag-off is the next scheduled milestone in that expansion plan.
