Kalamassery Rape Case: Kerala Minister Assures Strict Action

Kerala Women and Child Development Minister Bindu Krishna has assured strict action against those accused in the Kalamassery rape case and promised legal and psychological support for the survivor, who is receiving treatment at Government Medical College Hospital, Ernakulam.

Krishna visited the young woman at the hospital on Saturday and said the survivor was recovering physically but remained in severe psychological trauma. According to the minister, the woman had gone to a spa in Kalamassery after being offered a job and was allegedly tortured and raped.

“Although the survivor is recovering her physical health, she is in severe psychological trauma. Strict action will be ensured against those who lured her in by offering a job opportunity and brutally attacked her,” Krishna said, according to the report.

The minister said the government would not allow the accused to escape action under any circumstances. She also assured the survivor of legal and psychological assistance during her recovery and in the legal process.

The case has drawn attention to the risks faced by women seeking employment through informal or poorly regulated recruitment channels. The minister said the government would work to ensure that women could seek jobs and work safely, while stressing that exploitation carried out under the guise of job offers required uncompromising action.

Krishna also referred to the government’s anti-drug drive, Operation Toofan, saying that measures against drugs were continuing strongly. At the same time, she said the presence of people connected with such activity who remained “in the shadows” needed to be viewed seriously.

The minister’s comments link the case to two public-administration concerns: the protection of women entering the workforce and enforcement against networks that may use employment promises to exploit vulnerable people. The source report does not provide details of arrests, charges filed, the number of accused persons or the next scheduled legal proceeding.

The government’s stated next steps are to pursue strict action against those responsible and provide the survivor with legal and psychological support while she continues treatment at the Ernakulam medical college hospital.
