Telangana’s Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) has urged domestic electricity consumers to install rooftop solar systems, offering eligible households access to a Central subsidy of up to Rs.78,000 under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
The subsidy applies to rooftop solar systems with a capacity of up to 3 kWp. Under the scheme, eligible consumers can receive Rs.30,000 per kW for the first 2 kWp and Rs.18,000 for the additional 1 kWp. No additional Central subsidy is available for capacity above 3 kWp.
TGSPDCL said wider adoption of rooftop solar would help consumers reduce electricity expenses while supporting clean energy use and environmental protection. The company’s appeal comes as it reports tens of thousands of registrations and installations across multiple solar programmes in its service area.
To qualify for financial assistance, consumers must meet the scheme’s eligibility criteria and technical requirements. Installations must also comply with the Domestic Content Requirement, which requires the use of solar modules manufactured with domestically produced solar cells.
Consumers can apply through the official PM Surya Ghar portal. The process requires applicants to register using their mobile number and electricity connection details, select the relevant electricity distribution company and submit an application. After receiving the required approvals, they must install the system through a vendor registered under the scheme.
The installation must then complete net-metering, inspection and commissioning procedures. Once eligibility is verified and the prescribed formalities are completed, the subsidy will be credited directly to the beneficiary’s bank account in accordance with the scheme guidelines.
TGSPDCL said it has integrated its systems with PM Surya Ghar Portal 2.0 and introduced measures intended to reduce administrative delays. These include exemptions from technical feasibility studies for systems up to 10 kWp, automatic load enhancement under applicable provisions and a streamlined inspection process. Load enhancement charges can be collected through subsequent electricity bills.
The distribution company has also implemented applicable exemptions from submitting certain documents, including the net-metering agreement. An application fee exemption is available for systems up to 10 kWp registered between June 22, 2026, and March 31, 2027, subject to the applicable conditions.
Financial assistance is also available for rooftop solar installations undertaken by Group Housing Societies and Resident Welfare Associations. These systems can support common facilities, including electric vehicle charging. Assistance is provided at Rs.18,000 per kW for capacities up to 500 kWp, subject to the prescribed limit of 3 kWp per household.
TGSPDCL data recorded 44,662 PM Surya Ghar registrations and 29,816 installations with a combined capacity of 125.613 MW as of October 9. Under the broader net-metering category, the company reported 30,259 registrations, 29,777 installations and 640.852 MW of capacity.
The Model Solar Village programme recorded 4,335 registrations, 3,190 installations and 6.407 MW of capacity. Under PM-KUSUM Component-A, TGSPDCL reported 720 power purchase agreements, 35 installations and 59 MW of capacity.
Across these categories, the combined figures stood at 79,976 registrations, 62,818 installations and 831.872 MW of total capacity. TGSPDCL CMD Jitesh V. Patil said the company was working to create awareness and simplify the application process, and urged eligible domestic consumers to use the available Central subsidy.
TGSPDCL also conducts monthly meetings with solar vendors, the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation and REC officials on the first Wednesday of every month to review implementation and address issues related to the scheme.
