Chennai’s Metropolitan Transport Corporation will operate last-mile feeder bus services from bus stops near 11 Chennai Metro Rail Phase II stations between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani from Sunday, October 11, giving commuters a planned bus connection to the upcoming metro stretch.
The MTC said in a press release that the services will allow passengers to shuttle between bus and train services while travelling to different parts of the city. The arrangement is intended to address the gap between metro stations and the surrounding neighbourhoods, where passengers may otherwise need to depend on other modes to reach a station or continue their journey after getting off a train.
The service will cover stations along the Poonamallee Bypass–Vadapalani stretch. The MTC did not provide details in the announcement on the number of buses, operating frequency, routes, fares or service timings. These details will determine how effectively the feeder services connect residential areas and local bus stops with the metro stations.
Signage has been installed at all 11 Chennai Metro Rail stations to direct passengers to the nearest bus stops. The signs are intended to make the interchange between the metro system and MTC services easier, particularly for commuters who may not be familiar with the location of connecting bus stops.
The announcement places the bus corporation and the metro operator in a joint role in improving access to the rail network. While the metro provides the higher-capacity trunk connection, feeder buses are meant to help passengers complete the first or last part of their journeys. The effectiveness of that connection will depend on how closely bus operations align with passenger arrival and departure patterns at the stations.
The MTC and Chennai Metro Rail will also assess the need for additional feeder bus services based on passenger feedback and demand. The two agencies said they would explore the feasibility of expanding the services after observing how commuters use the initial connections.
The feeder buses are scheduled to begin operating on October 11 along the Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani corridor, with further services to be considered based on passenger response and demand.
