Gachibowli traffic congestion has worsened at IIIT Junction, where high-voltage transmission lines remain in the middle of an expanding road alignment and have narrowed traffic movement during peak hours. The junction, which connects residential areas with the Financial District, Gachibowli and HITEC City, handles nearly five lakh vehicles a day, according to a report by Telangana Today.
Commuters have reported peak-hour delays of up to 30 minutes, with traffic queues extending towards ISB Road, DLF Road and the Lingampally stretches. The transmission lines are positioned along the extended road section, while similar lines are present on three other sides of the junction. The obstruction has become more pronounced as road-widening and flyover-related works progress around the intersection.
The road alignment is designed to carry four lanes, but motorists say the existing obstruction effectively forces traffic into two lanes at the bottleneck. P Rajeshwar Rao, a resident of Manikonda who uses the route to travel to work, said the narrowing was particularly disruptive during office arrival and departure hours. He described the intersection as a point where traffic movement slows sharply when vehicle volumes rise.
Cyberabad Municipal Corporation officials said road-widening work had been completed to facilitate smoother traffic flow, but the shifting of the transmission lines had remained pending for several months. CMC Commissioner G Srijana told Telangana Today that the civic body had deposited Rs 7 crore with the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited to shift the lines as work on the IIIT Junction flyover progresses.
The power-line relocation is part of a wider set of utility and transport works at the junction. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is shifting water and sewerage lines in preparation for the flyover project. The water board has also recently carried out water-line work at Khajaguda after shutting down the water supply system for the intervention.
The planned flyover system includes a four-lane, bi-directional structure connecting ISB Road and DLF Road. A three-lane, one-way flyover is planned from DLF Road towards Gachibowli Stadium, while another three-lane, one-way flyover will connect ISB Road with Gachibowli and Indira Nagar. The project also includes a six-lane, bi-directional underpass between Indira Nagar and Gachibowli Stadium.
The junction’s current condition highlights the operational difficulty of expanding road capacity when electricity, water and sewerage assets occupy the same corridor. In this case, the civic corporation has said that funding for the transmission-line shift has been deposited, but the lines have not yet been removed from the road alignment. Until that work is completed, motorists continue to encounter a reduced carriageway alongside ongoing flyover and utility works.
CMC officials said the matter was being pursued and that shifting the transmission lines would help relieve congestion on the stretch. The relocation is expected to proceed alongside the flyover works at IIIT Junction.
