A 17-year-old engineering student drowned in a water-filled quarry in Hyderabad’s Malkaram area on Friday evening while reportedly taking photographs and shooting Instagram reels with six friends, police said. His body was recovered on Saturday after a search operation involving the Jawahar Nagar police and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Disaster Response Force.
The deceased was identified as M. Sai Pranav, a resident of Dammaiguda in Keesara mandal and a first-year BTech student at a private college in Cheeriyal. According to the police, Pranav had gone to the quarry with six friends during the outing.
Police said the student accidentally fell into the quarry and went missing. The quarry pit was filled with water, and the search operation continued until personnel recovered his body on Saturday.
The Jawahar Nagar police and GHMC DRF teams were involved in the rescue and recovery operation. The DRF is deployed by the civic body for emergency response in the city, including incidents requiring specialised search and rescue support.
The incident followed an outing in which the group was reportedly taking photographs and shooting social media reels at the quarry. The circumstances surrounding the fall are being investigated by the police. The report does not provide details on the quarry’s ownership, access arrangements or whether any safety restrictions were in place at the site.
Based on a complaint lodged by Pranav’s mother, the Jawahar Nagar police registered a case. The investigation will establish the sequence of events leading to the drowning and examine the circumstances at the quarry when the group visited the site.
