Tripura has announced a Rs 100 crore plan to restore and modernise the Dumboor hydel plant in Gomati district, which suffered severe damage during the 2024 floods. The project is expected to improve generation from the state’s only hydroelectric facility, with work likely to begin by December 2026.
The restoration plan was announced by Tripura power minister Ratan Lal Nath at a ground-breaking ceremony for the project. The state government and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) have completed a technical assessment of the damage and identified the restoration and modernisation requirements.
The project will focus on repairing the damaged facility and upgrading its generation infrastructure. According to the plan, the plant is expected to generate 10-11 MW after restoration. The facility originally had an installed capacity of 15 MW across three units.
The Dumboor plant was severely affected by floods in 2024, leaving Tripura’s ageing hydroelectric infrastructure in need of extensive repairs. The technical assessment was undertaken to determine the scope of restoration work, equipment requirements and preparatory measures before construction begins.
The proposed investment will be made by the Tripura government in collaboration with NHPC. The project is intended to strengthen the state’s electricity infrastructure and improve its use of renewable energy. Tripura currently has a power-surplus position but relies primarily on gas-based turbine power generation.
The restoration of Dumboor is therefore being taken up alongside the state’s existing generation system. Once the detailed assessments and preparatory procedures are completed, work is expected to start by December 2026. The authorities have not announced a revised completion timeline for the modernisation project.
