Malkaram Quarry Death Raises Safety Alarm After Student Falls

Malkaram quarry in Hyderabad region where a student died after falling into a water-filled pit

An 18-year-old B.Tech first-year student died after falling into a quarry pit at Malkaram in Jawahar Nagar, Medchal-Malkajgiri district, on Friday evening, after visiting the location with a group of engineering students for photographs, according to a report by Deccan Chronicle.

The deceased was identified as Pawan Sai. The report said that 12 engineering students had visited the quarry after watching Instagram reels that presented the location as a scenic spot for photography. The visit placed the students at an informal recreational site where the quarry pit and its water body formed the central attraction.

According to the report, Pawan Sai was sitting on a rock near the quarry and attempted to touch the water when he accidentally slipped and fell into the pit. His friends alerted the Disaster Response Force after the incident.

Disaster Response Force teams reached the location and began a search operation. Rescue personnel searched the quarry for nearly two hours before locating and recovering the student’s body, the report said. The recovery operation brought emergency responders to a site being used by visitors for leisure and photography.

The incident highlights the risks that can arise when disused or active quarry spaces become informal visitor destinations without the safety arrangements normally associated with public recreational areas. The report does not specify whether the site had barriers, warning signs, controlled access or other measures to prevent visitors from approaching the water’s edge.

Jawahar Nagar police registered a case following the incident. The student’s body was shifted to Gandhi Hospital for a post-mortem examination, according to the report.

The account also points to the role of social media in directing visitors to locations that may not have been planned, managed or secured as public attractions. In this case, the quarry was reportedly promoted through Instagram reels as a scenic place for photographs, bringing a group of students to the site before the fatal fall.

The available report does not establish the ownership or operational status of the quarry, whether the location was officially open to visitors, or whether any prior safety complaints had been recorded. The immediate official steps identified in the report are the police case, the rescue operation and the post-mortem examination at Gandhi Hospital.
