Jayanagar Smart Parking Brings Free Home-Front Parking for Residents

Jayanagar smart parking on a commercial road in Bengaluru with marked spaces and traffic monitoring.

Jayanagar smart parking will not charge local residents for parking vehicles in front of their homes, while paid parking will operate on selected commercial roads from 9 am to 10 pm, South city municipal commissioner K. N. Ramesh said.

The smart parking system is scheduled to begin on selected major roads in Jayanagar. The civic body said the initiative is intended to improve traffic management, reduce unauthorised parking and help motorists locate designated parking spaces more efficiently.

Ramesh made the announcement while responding to representations from leaders of the Jayanagar Traders’ Association, who sought a reduction in parking charges and requested free parking for the first 30 minutes. The traders also raised other concerns related to the implementation of the system.

The commissioner said the advantages and disadvantages of implementing the traders’ requests would be examined in detail before further action is taken. The response leaves the proposed fee reduction and the 30-minute free-parking request under consideration.

Clarifying the scope of the charges, Ramesh said the smart parking system would be introduced only on the main commercial roads. Residents would not be charged for parking vehicles in front of their homes, he said. Parking fees on commercial roads would apply only between 9 am and 10 pm.

“Citizens of Jayanagar will not be charged any fee for parking vehicles in front of their residences. Parking charges will apply only on commercial roads from 9 am to 10 pm,” Ramesh said, according to the report. He also appealed to traders and customers to cooperate with the scheme, describing it as a measure introduced in the public interest.

The system is expected to use CCTV cameras for monitoring selected roads, a mobile application showing real-time parking availability and variable message signboards. Representatives of Park Lens, the organisation implementing the project, said these facilities would help motorists find designated parking spaces without driving around in search of a spot.

The project’s stated operational aim is to make parking availability more visible and to discourage parking outside designated areas. For traders and customers, however, the immediate questions are the level of parking fees, the treatment of short-duration visits and how the system will work on busy commercial stretches.

The civic administration has not announced in the report the final parking fee structure, the exact roads covered or the date on which the system will become operational. Those details, along with the decision on the traders’ requests, are expected to be clarified as implementation proceeds.
