A severe Delhi-Gurugram traffic jam left thousands of vehicles stranded at the Sarhaul border on Friday night after security arrangements and barricading were intensified ahead of a proposed CJP protest in Delhi. The disruption affected commuters travelling between the two cities during the evening peak period, with long queues reported on both sides of the border.
Traffic movement was particularly slow on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and on the road from Guru Dronacharya Metro station towards the Aya Nagar border. Vehicles were also backed up on the Delhi side of the Sarhaul border, affecting people returning from work and other travellers using the inter-city corridor.
The congestion was reported at around 10:30 pm on Friday. Delhi Police barricading and changes to traffic movement ahead of the proposed demonstration were cited as the main reasons for the disruption. Traffic on the Delhi-Noida route was also affected, with slow movement reported between Kalindi Kunj and Sarita Vihar.
The Delhi Traffic Police has warned that traffic may remain affected on 10 October at 30 major locations in and around New Delhi because of the CJP demonstration. Diversions may be introduced from 6 am, depending on conditions. The locations listed in the advisory include the Dhaula Kuan flyover, Mandi House, Jhandewalan, Panchkuian Road, Connaught Place, Barakhamba Road, Janpath, Parliament Street and Jantar Mantar Road.
The advisory covers roads that connect residential areas, commercial districts, government offices, public institutions and major transport points in central Delhi. Changes on these routes could affect commuters travelling towards railway stations, bus terminals and the airport, in addition to people heading to central Delhi.
The traffic police has asked residents to avoid non-essential travel and check traffic conditions before leaving home. Passengers travelling to railway stations, bus terminals and the airport have been advised to allow additional time. Traffic updates are available through the Delhi Traffic Police website, traffic.delhipolice.gov.in, and its helpline number, 1095.
The police has said that diversions will be implemented according to traffic conditions on the day. Commuters have been advised to follow official updates before using the Delhi-Gurugram, Delhi-Noida and central Delhi routes.
