Ahmedabad Police Detain 100+ Youth Before Delhi Protest Travel

More than 100 young people were detained in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar before they could travel to Delhi for protests seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, according to a report by Divya Bhaskar. Police also increased checks at railway stations and major bus terminals to prevent activists from reaching the national capital.

The reported detentions came as opposition parties and the CJP intensified nationwide demonstrations over the demand concerning the Chief Election Commissioner. The report said people from different parts of the country were travelling to Delhi to join the protests, with a significant number of Gen Z participants among them.

In Ahmedabad, the Crime Branch, Special Operations Group and Special Branch were reported to have conducted a joint operation. Police kept watch on trains heading towards Delhi as well as private and state-run buses. Checks were arranged at railway stations and key bus stands to identify whether protesters or activists were travelling to the demonstrations.

The reported action has placed the city’s transport hubs at the centre of a wider law-and-order response. Railway stations and bus terminals are among Ahmedabad’s main inter-city movement points, connecting the city with Delhi and other parts of Gujarat. The report did not provide details of the legal provisions used for the detentions, the identities of those detained or the duration for which they were held.

A high-level meeting involving senior officials from Gujarat’s Home Department and police was held in Gandhinagar late on Friday to review the situation and plan the administration’s next steps. According to the report, the meeting focused on preventing any untoward incident in the state and maintaining law and order.

The police response was also linked to the possibility of a fresh gathering in Ahmedabad. Young people unable to travel to Delhi were expected to assemble near Ellisbridge on Saturday to hold a protest. The report said more than 1,000 young people had previously gathered at short notice within two hours, prompting the authorities to prepare for another possible mobilisation.

Additional police personnel were expected to be deployed from early Saturday at sensitive locations in western Ahmedabad. The report did not specify the total number of personnel assigned, the locations classified as sensitive or whether permission had been granted for a protest near Ellisbridge.

The developments show how a protest centred in Delhi has extended into Ahmedabad’s public transport network and city policing arrangements. For residents, the immediate implications are likely to involve heightened security checks at stations and bus terminals, additional police presence in parts of western Ahmedabad and possible disruption around Ellisbridge if a gathering takes place.

The next official steps identified in the report are the continued monitoring of travel routes to Delhi, deployment at sensitive locations and the police response to any gathering near Ellisbridge on Saturday. No independent statement from the detained young people or their representatives was included in the supplied report.
