Ahmedabad Customs officials detained a 43-year-old passenger at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport after allegedly finding five foreign-marked gold biscuits hidden in the pockets of his trousers on Friday, October 9. The seized gold, weighing 582.7 grams, was valued at ₹88.97 lakh, according to the department.
The passenger, identified in the report as a resident of Bharuch, had arrived on a flight from Dubai. Ahmedabad Customs said the Air Intelligence Unit intercepted him based on information generated through passenger profiling.
During the search, officers found five biscuits containing 24-carat gold concealed in the passenger’s trouser pockets. The biscuits carried foreign markings, and their total market value was assessed at ₹88.97 lakh, the department said.
Customs officials seized the gold under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and arrested the passenger. The seizure places the case within the enforcement system that monitors high-value goods entering the country through international airports and investigates whether the goods were imported without the required declaration or payment of applicable duties.
The Ahmedabad Customs investigation will examine the circumstances behind the alleged attempt to bring the gold into India and whether other people were involved, according to the report. No further details about the passenger’s identity, the flight number or the next legal proceedings were provided in the supplied account.
The seizure also highlights the role of passenger profiling and airport-based intelligence units in identifying suspected smuggling attempts. At Ahmedabad airport, such operations are handled through coordination between customs officers and the airport’s international-arrivals enforcement system. The investigation into the alleged illegal import remains ongoing.
