Telangana Recharge Pits Get Push as Drought Risk Grows

Telangana recharge pits being built near a village school in Siddipet district

Telangana recharge pits received a fresh push after Medak MP M. Raghunandan Rao urged farmers across villages to use financial assistance under the VB-G RAM-G scheme to build structures that can improve groundwater levels and support dried-up borewells.

Rao inaugurated the first recharge system constructed under the scheme at a school in Chinna Nizampet village in Bhoompeta mandal of Siddipet district. He called for the construction of recharge pits to be taken up across villages as a mass movement and asked local representatives and officials to begin the work on a war footing.

Under the VB-G RAM-G scheme, farmers are provided financial assistance of ₹36,000 to construct water recharge pits. According to Rao, the support should be used quickly to improve the water-holding capacity of borewells and conserve available water.

The MP linked the drying of borewells to adverse weather conditions associated with El Niño and warned that villages should prepare for a possible drought. His appeal places the recharge pits within a wider local response to falling groundwater availability, rather than treating them as isolated farm-level works.

Rao asked sarpanches, deputy sarpanches, public representatives and government officials to coordinate the construction of the recharge structures. The proposed mobilisation would involve village-level institutions and public officials in identifying and taking forward works under the scheme.

The recharge systems are intended to help water enter the ground and improve the availability of groundwater around borewells. In the reported initiative, the first system was inaugurated at a school, indicating that the programme can also extend beyond individual agricultural plots to community-linked sites.

For farmers dependent on borewells, the immediate issue is whether the financial assistance translates into completed recharge works before water shortages intensify. The scheme’s stated purpose, as described by the MP, is to strengthen groundwater levels, revive borewells affected by dry weather and reduce the impact of future shortages.

The appeal also assigns a coordinating role to village leadership. Sarpanches, deputy sarpanches and other public representatives have been asked to work with officials so that construction moves beyond a single demonstration site in Chinna Nizampet and reaches villages across the area.

Rao said local initiatives would help protect farmers from future water shortages. The next step is the wider implementation of recharge-pit construction using the ₹36,000 assistance available under the VB-G RAM-G scheme, with village representatives and officials expected to initiate the work.
